Mrs. Marie Stern

I became involved with helping to improve patient experience at my local hospitals because of my experience as a patient, as a teacher and as a manager.

A lifelong medical condition has resulted in me having a range of medical and surgical treatment at hospitals in England.  Treatments, and patient experience, have changed enormously throughout my lifetime.  Most have improved but, always, the difference between ‘good’ and ‘poor’ care often depends upon the quality of interaction with the staff.

I have been involved in education for my whole career. I started working with primary aged children in South London and later retrained to teach pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities.  I became Head teacher of a large school for these pupils.  Alongside this work, I advised colleagues in other schools how to identify and teach children with additional needs.  I became a trained counsellor for a large voluntary organisation and used those skills to develop educational provision for students who were terminally ill.  I wrote all the guidelines for schools in
London to provide good care for pupils with long-term medical conditions

I am also a member of the Patient Participation Group at my local GP surgery.
